Diverse Group of Youth, Prevention Groups Come Together Behind U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy
/EINPresswire.com/ SAN DIEGO, CA – July 22, 2012 — Community groups from around the San Diego Metro Area stand in support of U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy today in support of her enforcement of federal drug laws. In a joint statement, the groups ranging from Californians for Drug Free Youth (CADFY), the state’s oldest drug prevention coalition, the to North Coastal Prevention Coalition (NCPC), a local drug prevention organization, applauded USA Duffy’s actions.
“Cloaked in white coats and working under the guise of compassion, these marijuana profiteers, often with little to no medical background, have been actively advertising marijuana to youth and spreading the harmful message that pot is safe,” remarked John Redman, Executive Director of CADFY. “Since we know these pot shops have increased marijuana use in our area, we applaud Laura Duffy for putting a stop to them.”
Two peer-reviewed studies published in prominent scientific journals in late 2011 reveal that states with entrenched medical marijuana systems, like California, have youth marijuana use rates significantly higher than states without such systems. Locally in San Diego, this has translated to a significant increase in marijuana use over the last five years.
It is clear that cultivating, transporting, possessing, selling and using marijuana violates federal law. So-called “medical marijuana dispensaries” are violating both state and federal law and are making huge profits, as evidenced by recent IRS investigations. Other studies show that less than 3% of marijuana dispensary patients are terminally ill.
“Pot shops invite lawbreakers to take advantage of the system,” said Aaron Byzak, President of the North Coastal Prevention Coalition. “I’m glad U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy, DEA officials and local law enforcement officers are keeping a close eye on these operations, which continue to be a thorn in the side of everyone from anti-drug groups to parents.”
