/EINPresswire.com/ The new international business continuity standard ISO/IEC 22301:2012 was published in May 2012 and replaces the BS25999 standard. ISO/IEC 22301:2012 specifies the requirements for a business continuity management system (BCMS) and is applicable to organisations of any type and size.
In May, Spanish financial services company Bankinter became the first company in the world to be certified to ISO22301 and it is beyond doubt that more companies will follow soon.
Alan Calder, CEO of IT Governance, says, ‘Our experience with management standards shows that it takes a while for organisations to realise the business benefits of certification. Those ones who understand them sooner than others will get ahead of the game and reap the benefits while the competition will be left behind.’
Calder continues, ‘Implementation of the ISO22301 standard will help companies deal with natural disasters and other unforeseen events, like travel disruption or power failure, enabling them to go ‘back to business as usual’ quickly, bringing financial loss to a minimum.’
‘Certification, on the other hand, is essential for demonstrating to their clients and other stakeholders that the service upon which they are reliant won’t be affected. Certified companies are usually preferred partners before non-certified vendors. In some cases, companies can only tender for a contract if they can prove certification’ concludes Calder.
A BSI joint survey from March 2012 revealed that one of the biggest drivers for implementing a business continuity management system (BCMS) is corporate governance, followed by potential or existing customers as well as legislation and regulation reasons.
Companies that have already been certified to other management standards such as ISO27001, ISO9001, ISO14001, will double their benefits by integrating ISO22301 into their existing system management structure.
IT Governance delivers two essential courses to get companies started with ISO22301 implementation as soon as possible.
The ISO22301 BCMS Foundation Training Course provides an introduction to the best practices associated with business continuity management as defined by ISO22301.
