Texas – A federal judge has ordered a Texas company to pay $1.37 million in back pay to mentally disabled workers. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Henry’s Turkey Service in Goldthwaite purportedly underpaid mentally disabled workers at a turkey plant in Iowa at 41 cents per hour.

The company was stated to have deducted fees for expenses that included room and board from the pay and Social Security checks of the 32 workers who were paid $65 per month.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a lawsuit against Hill Country Farms, which conducted business as Henry’s Turkey Service.

Dallas-based EEOC attorney Robert Canino, a litigator in the case, is quoted by the AP as saying in a statement about the case, “Unfortunately, this case also reflects the sad reality that we still have a ways to go to ensure that employment of persons with disabilities does not require them to sacrifice their true earning capacity or their human dignity.”
