New York – A former inmate has received a settlement from New York State in his wrongful conviction lawsuit. As reported by The New York Times, 38-year-old Michael Clancy, whose murder conviction for a 1997 shooting was over turned in 2008, received $2 million in the settlement.
As noted in the report, a State Supreme Court justice threw out Clancy’s conviction, due to new developments in the case.
Ronald L. Kuby, an attorney for Clancy, is quoted in the report as stating of the settlement, “For Michael, it’s the final exoneration… It means the end of a very long ordeal.”
Clancy is further quoted as stating of plans to help his parents with the money, “They squandered a lot of their retirement money on my legal bills… It’s only right that I give them the retirement they deserve. I’m still going to be working. This is a nice amount of money. It relieves the financial pressure, but it’s not something where I could say, hey, I don’t need to work.”
