Shiply.com, the online transport marketplace, today advised courier and haulage companies to consider switching to winter tyres to combat weather interruptions.
Winter tyres are legal in some EU countries such as Germany, Austria, Finland and Sweden however only 6% of surveyed hauliers use winter tyres according to Freight Transport Association (FTA). While price may be a factor as winter tyres cost an additional 15% than standard tyres, the usage rate is thought to be due to lack of knowledge about the product.
The extreme weather conditions in the UK for the last few years has prompted awareness that courier and haulage companies should seriously consider using winter tyres, especially for regional or nation-wide couriers who are more likely to experience severe conditions
Winter tyres are specifically designed to retain flexibility in low temperatures (below 7°c) and give good braking performance on snow, ice and wet roads.
Having the tyres already fitted could provide a competitive advantage as deliveries can be carried out despite the weather conditions.
“It’s a common thought that we don’t need winter tyres in the UK.” said Robert Matthams, Managing Directors of Shiply. “However, for couriers and hauliers travelling long distances up and down the country, the benefits of winter tyres are too good to ignore. Think of them as an investment which will pay back when you complete work in difficult weather conditions or additional work you get because others could not complete their deliveries.”
