/EINPresswire.com/The Arthritis Foundation’s California Coast Classic Bicycle Tour sponsored by Amgen is a scenic bike ride offering a fabulous 8 day, 525 mile tour from San Francisco to Los Angeles with a 2 day, 150 mile option from Buellton to Los Angeles
The Arthritis Foundation contacted CompletePT to participate in their largest national fundraising event, a bike tour from San Francisco to Santa Monica over eight days. Orthopedic surgeon Robert Klapper, M.D. had been named Medical Honoree for the event and CompletePT’s CEO and President, Lynda Huey, was named the first ever Rehab Honoree.
CompletePT reviewed the bike route: from San Francisco to Santa Cruz, then to Monterey, Big Sur, San Simeon, Pismo Beach, Buellton, Ventura, and finishing in Santa Monica. CompletePT’s Financial Director James Cowan and his biking friend Marc Karamanoogian rode the entire 525 miles to raise money for research and programs to improve the quality of lives of both adults and children with arthritis.
CompletePT sent physical therapists Kristy Laing, DPT, Lindsay Fujinaka, DPT, and Mike Blair, MSPT, to meet the riders in Buellton and Ventura and provide free treatments to those who were hurting near the end of this long-distance event. Riders were grateful for the knowledge and skill of these PTs at the end of a long day’s ride.

Each day during the ride James Cowan tweeted photos of the spectacular coastline ride. He also told us the names of children with arthritis who were cheering them along the route and thanking them for raising money to combat their health challenges.
Lynda Huey joined teammates James and Marc on the last day to ride to the closing ceremonies at the Yahoo Center in Santa Monica where she gave a brief talk to the riders and families and friends who greeted them joyfully after the long bike ride.
“Every hour of every day, we treat patients with arthritis at CompletePT Pool & Land Physical Therapy”, says Lynda Huey. These people particularly benefit from our 90-degree indoor pool where they increase strength, flexibility, mobility and function without aggravating their joints. Physical therapy in water is the safest, most progressive form of rehabilitation because it takes place in a gravity-neutral environment thus removing trauma from weight-bearing joints. The buoyancy of the water takes the weight off painful joints while patients can strengthen the muscles around the joints by running, walking, and performing dozens of exercises against the resistance of the water.
Patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee, hip, and spine put on a flotation belt to do deep-water running, walking, and many other exercises against the resistance of the water. They can maintain aerobic and anaerobic fitness doing deep-water intervals. They stretch, using the unique double bar system in the pool. They perform a full kicking series designed to strength core muscles and all the muscles of the legs and buttocks. They finish with resistance training using specialized equipment that creates a similar effect to weight training, but doesn’t create any of the aggravation to the knee, hip, or back of such land training.
CompletePT has helped many patients prevent – or delay for years – knee, hip, and back surgeries. Most OA patients are able to regain strength to return to their normal daily and recreational activities.
In water, those who have rheumatoid arthritis (RA) enjoy a great sense of freedom to perform movements that wouldn’t be possible on land. The deep-water intervals work well for these people as well, although they must often start very slowly and increase the effort quite gradually. For someone with RA, the exercises they perform in water may become the only ones that not only are comfortable to do, but also feel really terrific.
The moment patients slip into the warm water, they smile and relax and after feeling they can do so much more in water than on land, they regain hope for a fast and lasting recovery.
These are many of the reasons CompletePT decided to jump into the fund-raising effort with the Arthritis Foundation and work to make a difference for the many, many patients of all ages that they treat every day, every week, and every month.
