New York – Two brothers have been charged in connection with a purported lottery scam attempt. As reported by ABC News, the brothers stand accused of grand larceny and other charges after purportedly trying to claim a lottery ticket belonging to a customer at their family’s convenience store, six years after convincing the rightful ticket owner to give it to them.
Andy Ashkar, 34, claimed he purchased the ticket in 2006, and planned to share the winnings with his brother Nayel, 36. The actual winner of the ticket, who authorities are now referring to as John Doe, believed he had won $5,000 instead of the actual $5 million prize and took an offer by the brothers to be given $4,000 for the ticket to purportedly avoid complications.
If convicted of the charges brought against them, Andy Ashkar faces up to 25 years in prison and Nayel Ashkar could be sentenced to up to 15 years.
