Next year’s Imagine festival at the Southbank Centre in London will have a different feel as children are being given the chance to take over the planning of the event.

Sponsored by the Book People, the festival will take place from Monday 11th to Sunday 24th February 2013. To come up with ideas for the event, a panel of children aged between seven and 11 from local schools took part in the Festival Ideas Cloud and decided to host a series of debates on the issues that are important to them. These include concerns about education and why adults invent things that kill people.

There are more than 100 free and ticketed events taking place at Imagine from 10:30am until 4pm every day at the Southbank Centre. These include showings of animated films, interactive performance pieces, a day looking at the rise of alternative families such as same-sex marriages and a chance for children to meet life-size dinosaur puppets.

Literature is a key aspect of Imagine and author of The Tiger Who Came to Tea Judith Kerr will be making a special appearance to read from her new book, The Great Granny Gang. Other readings will come from Anthony Horowitz, comedian David Walliams, radio DJ Simon Mayo, James Patterson and Frank Cottrell Boyce.

What’s more, the Red House Book Awards, the only national book award voted for by children, will take place during the festival.

Seni Glaister, chief executive of the Book People, said: “The Imagine Children’s Festival has gone from strength to strength, year on year, and I think this year’s programme speaks for itself. There’s something for absolutely everyone and the Book People is thrilled to be involved with such a dynamic, dazzling and uniquely diverse festival ? the minute anyone sets foot in Southbank Centre, they’ll have no doubt that they’re going to be a part of something very, very special.”
