Washington – Two organizations are seeking a government investigation into $12 million in anonymous campaign contributions to a tea party group. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the election watchdog groups purport the funneling of the money through two Tennessee companies and related activities appeared to be in violation of U.S. laws.
The organizations, Campaign Legal Center and Democracy 21, are calling on the Justice Department and Federal Election Commission to conduct an investigation in the allegations.
Senior counsel for the Campaign Legal Center, Paul S. Ryan, is quoted by the AP as stating of the matter, “These companies appear to have been created to hide the identities of one or more donors that pumped millions of dollars into a super PAC anonymously in the final weeks before an election.”
