Beaumont, Texas – A Texas inmate has won an appeal regarding his right to receive free kosher jail meals. As reported by the UK Daily Mail, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans has determined that Max Moussazadeh, an Orthodox Jew who is serving a prison sentence in connection with a 1993 fatal shooting, has a right to be served free Kosher meals while in prison in accordance with his religious beliefs.
Moussazadeh, 35, filed the initial lawsuit in 2005, after being denied by the State of Texas access to a Kosher meal plan. His case was reportedly dismissed by a lower court prior to being reversed by the federal appeals court.
Luke Goodrich, deputy general counsel for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which aided in the legal defense of Moussazadeh, is quoted in the report as stating of the case, “Even prisoners retain their human rights, and the state cannot sacrifice those rights on the altar of bureaucratic convenience.”
