Washington – Area New York lawmakers expressed frustration Tuesday night by the decision of the House Republican leadership to not hold a vote on a measure to help victims of Superstorm Sandy. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), a vote had been expected prior to the end of Congress’ term on Thursday; however, Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., purportedly stated he was told that the vote during this session had been deserted.
A $60.4 billion bill was approved by the Senate on Friday, and a $27 billion measure has been drafted by the House Appropriations Committee.
Rep. Michael Grimm, R-N.Y. is quoted by the AP as stating of the voting decision, “I’m here tonight saying to myself for the first time that I’m not proud of the decision my team has made… It is the wrong decision, and I’ m going to be respectful and ask that the speaker reconsider his decision. Because it’s not about politics, it’s about human lives.”
Michael Steel, a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, is quoted in the report as saying, “The speaker is committed to getting this bill passed this month.”
