/EINPresswire.com/ An Army directive prohibits Army units from using video games to train for specific Army jobs. Although some think video game experience helps meet the qualifications to join the Army, training games aren’t typically offered to civilians.
Alpharetta, GA — A year ago, some Army soldiers could play on the job — literally.
However, that all changed last summer when a four star Army general signed a directive that prohibited Army units from purchasing commercial video game systems specifically for training purposes. Games like Call of Duty, Decisive Action and Medal of Honor and were previously used by units to supplement their training programs, but now units who use Army training funds for these games could see their training budget revoked.
Part of the reason for this directive is that the Army wants to ensure that training methods benefit multiple units — not just those who have specific Army jobs. It does not prohibit gaming as a training method, instead the directive instructs unit commanders to use games that have been designed specifically for the Army and aren’t available on the civilian market.
“There’s definitely a harsh disparity between a soldier who’s using these video games for training and a casual gamer. By restricting the use of commercial games, the Army wants to ensure that games used are included in the official Games for Training program,” said Larry Fowler of USArmy.com (http://www.usarmy.com/).
