Forth Worth – A Texas grocer has been sentenced for food stamp fraud. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Ali Ugas Mohamud of Arlington was sentenced by a federal judge on Friday to nearly five years in prison. Mohamud was also ordered to pay over $1.4 million in restitution.
Mohamud, who owned Tawakal Grocery Store, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of food stamp fraud and wire fraud last year. He also pleaded guilty to conducting an unlicensed money transmitting business.
Authorities state Mohamud exchanged food stamp benefits for cash in addition to engaging in other illegal financial activities at his store.
