Europe – Nestle has withdrawn its Buitoni brand pasta meals from stores in Italy and Spain due to a horsemeat scandal. As reported by Reuters, the multinational food company made the decision after traces of horse DNA was found in batches of meat used in the meals.
The recent discovery of horsemeat products labeled as beef and sold across Europe have prompted consumer concerns, withdrawals of products, and government investigations in the matter.
Nestle spokesman Chris Hogg is quoted in the report as stating of not anticipating a material financial impact on Nestle’s operations with the product withdrawals, “These are chilled pasta products that do not have a long shelf life so there are very low levels of inventory.”
