New Mexico – A Santa Fe jury has acquitted a man charged with the murder of a preschool teacher. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Adrian Gonzales, 31, was found not guilty of the murder of Victoriano Moises Byrne-Gonzales, 21, who was stabbed to death when he intervened in a fight Gonzales was having with his girlfriend.
Gonzales was also charged with manslaughter in the death of Byrne-Gonzales, and aggravated assault in another stabbing, but a mistrial was declared for both counts. Gonzales could be retried on these charges.
An attorney for Gonzales, Joseph Campbell, claims his client’s actions were in self defense. Campbell is quoted by the AP as stating, “He didn’t know he had killed anyone. Why didn’t he know? He didn’t intend to kill anyone… The only thing he intended to do was get out of that situation.”
Byrne-Gonzales’ fiancé reportedly gave birth to the couple’s first son one week following his death.
