Albany, NY – Annie George, the widow of late hotelier Mathai George, has been convicted on a charge of knowingly keeping an illegal servant in the country, but will not have to pay her additional wages. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), George was accused of keeping Valsamma Mathai practically a prisoner in her home and cheating her out of more than $300,000 in wages by prosecutors.
George alleged that she did not know that Mathai, who worked for her for five and a half years, was not in the U.S. legally. Mathai claimed that she was mistreated during the time she worked in the 20,000-square-foot mansion, and forced to sleep in a closet and was not allowed to leave the home; however, George was not convicted on any charge related to these allegations.
For her conviction of harboring an illegal immigrant, George could face up to five years prison and a fine of $250,000. Her sentencing is set for July 9.
