Montevideo, Uruguay – Uruguayan lawmakers have voted to legalize gay marriage. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the bill was backed Wednesday by 71 members of the 92-seat chamber in the Senate.

Federico Grana, with the gay rights group that drafted the proposal Black Sheep Collective, is quoted by the AP as stating of the vote, “We are living a historic moment… In terms of the steps needed, we calculate that the first gay couples should be getting married 90 days after the promulgation of the law, or in the middle of July.”
