As two of Britain’s most recognizable and successful exports, the Land Rover SUV brand and the James Bond movie franchise have proven more than capable of adapting to changes over the years. It was appropriate, then, that the latest actor to reinvent the role of Agent 007, Daniel Craig, was on hand to introduce the redesigned 2014 Range Rover Sport at the New York International Auto Show in late March.
Dropping approximately 800 pounds thanks to a new aluminum unibody structure, the redesigned Range Rover Sport is more nimble and fuel efficient on the road compared to its predecessor, yet its off-roading technology has advanced as well. A next-generation Terrain Response 2 system analyzes driving conditions in real time and now automatically selects the right terrain program, whether it is for snow, gravel, mud, sand or rocks. Meanwhile, an extra 2.3 inches of ground clearance and nearly six more inches of wading depth provide the 2014 Range Rover Sport with plenty of leeway as it traverses rugged areas.
“Just like the latest James Bond maintains a classic sense of sophistication despite his modern edge, the new Range Rover Sport maintains its signature mix of capability and luxury in a lighter and sleeker package,” said Dave Edwards, general manager of Land Rover Peabody, a Range Rover dealer in Massachusetts. “The 2014 Range Rover Sport is not only the fastest, most agile and responsive version yet, but it is also the most stylish.”
Pulling design cues from the popular Range Rover Evoque, the redesigned Range Rover Sport features a sloping roofline, narrower headlamps and a tailgate-mounted spoiler. Under the hood, buyers will be able to choose between two engines: a 340-horsepower supercharged V6 and a 510-horsepower supercharged V8. Inside, passengers will find a more sharply angled center console and larger seat bolsters for a sportier feel.
Even with a new generation in the works, the current Range Rover Sport remained Land Rover’s best seller in March, moving 1,386 units for a 2 percent increase year-over-year. Coming in close behind was the Range Rover Evoque, which sold a record 1,157 units, a rise of 47 percent compared to March 2012. The strong performances by the Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Evoque helped the Land Rover brand set a new March sales record, with 4,314 models finding new homes across the lineup.
“The Range Rover Sport continues to be very popular with buyers, so the sky is the limit when the new model comes out later this year,” added Edwards. “We’ve seen our customers respond very positively to the modern styling of the Evoque, and we expect that the Range Rover Sport will benefit from receiving some of the same exterior touches.”
