Port Louis, Mauritius – FIFA has approved stricter punishment for acts of racism by a club or its fans. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), new regulations were approved by the governing body of association football (soccer) at its annual Congress on Friday.

The approval of the new measures follows a series of incidents in countries like Italy and England linked to the negative treatment of black players from fans. A 99 percent majority of FIFA member countries voted to pass the measures by secret ballot.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter is quoted by the AP as stating of stopping racist abuse, “We are doing something now.”
