Vermont – R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co has been ordered by a state-court judge to pay the state of Vermont $8.3 million over consumer-protection law violations. As reported by Bloomberg, Vermont Superior Court Judge Dennis Pearson issued an injunction prohibiting the company from claiming there was a reduction of health risks for its tobacco products without scientific evidence to support the assertion. Reynolds purportedly stated that one of its cigarette brands, Eclipse, reduced health risks.
Vermont Attorney General William Sorrell is quoted in the report as stating of the ruling, “This decision is a multimillion-dollar wakeup call for Reynolds and other tobacco companies… If you make unsubstantiated health claims about your deadly products, you will pay dearly.”
