California – A California judge has ruled that yoga could be taught in a public school district, rejecting the claims of some parents who suggest the practice is in violation of the constitution. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), San Diego Superior Court Judge John S. Meyer ruled that although yoga is a religious practice, the method of how it is taught at campuses in the Encinitas Union School District is not inherently religious.

The schools offer 30-minute yoga classes twice per week in addition to normal physical education classes. An estimated 30 families reportedly opted out of the classes. Those involved in the lawsuit requested that the program under which the classes are offered be suspended.

The yoga classes in the district are reportedly funded by three-year $533,720 grant from the Encinitas based non-profit group, the K.P. Jois Foundation.
