Santa Ana, CA – A Saudi princess has been charged with human trafficking after she allegedly forced a domestic worker to work for her, holding the Kenyan woman against her will. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), 42-year-old Meshael Alayban was arrested Wednesday and faces one count of human trafficking.
The victim, a 30-year-old Kenyan woman, told authorities that she was forced to work excessive hours and underpaid in addition to not being permitted to leave after being hired in Kenya in 2012. The woman claimed her passport had been taken from her when she arrived in Saudi Arabia after being hired.
According to authorities, the victim and four women from the Philippines came to the U.S. with Alayban’s family in May. The four other women left the Irvine condo Alayban’s family was staying in voluntarily with police after they arrived to search the home.
Alayban, who is stated to be one of the wives of Saudi Prince Abdulrahman bin Nasser bin Abdulaziz al Saud, is due for arraignment on Thursday. If convicted, she could receive up to 12 years in prison.
