New Orleans – Halliburton Energy Services has reportedly agreed to plead guilty in connection with charges linked to the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), federal officials stated Thursday that the Houston-based company agreed to plead guilty to destroying evidence.
According to a statement released by Halliburton, the Justice Department will not be pursuing further criminal prosecution of the company in relation to conduct related to the oil spill.
The company is quoted by the AP as stating it agreed to plead guilty “to one misdemeanor violation associated with the deletion of records created after the Macondo well incident, to pay the statutory maximum fine of $200,000 and to accept a term of three years probation.”
A court must approve the plea agreement, as further noted in Halliburton’s statement.
