New York, NY — A multi-vehicle accident killed one woman and injured four others after a vehicle entered the wrong way on I-87. The fatal automobile accident occurred around 8:50 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the Tappan Zee Bridge, reports MyFoxNY.com.
According to New York State Police, 69-year-old Michael Schechel, of Thiells, was traveling southbound in a white SUV in the northbound lane on the Rockland County side of the bridge, when his vehicle collided head on with a Nissan driven by Newman Ayeh-Branchie, 57, of Hillcrest.
The Nissan rolled several times and came to a rest of its roof in the middle lane of traffic.
Juan Robles, 34, of the Bronx, was traveling north on the bridge when he swerved to miss Schechel’s vehicle and collided with the Nissan.
A fourth northbound vehicle, operated by 44-year-old Nancy Gallo, of Basking Ridge, N.J., when she rear-ended Robles’ vehicle.
A fifth vehicle, driven by 40-year-old Thomas Gibson, of Poughkeepsie, sideswiped Schechel’s vehicle.
Responding emergency medical crews pronounced a passenger of Ayeh-Brachie’s vehicle, Hannah Ayeh-Brachie, 56, dead at the scene of the crash. The other injured drivers were taken to Nyack Hospital where they are reportedly in serious to critical condition.
The wreck remains under investigations and no arrests have been made at this time. It is unknown what prompted Schechel to enter the bridge going the wrong way.
