New York City – A New York City software engineer recently made headlines for making the offer to a homeless man to provide him with coding classes. As reported by Good Morning America, Patrick McConlogue approached the 36-year-old man with the options of taking $100 or being given a laptop, three JavaScript books, and two months of instruction on coding, which he planned to provide. The man, Leo, chose the latter.

McConlogue, 23, is quoted in the report as stating of making the offer, “I walk by a homeless guy every day on the way to work and I get this feeling every day that he is a smart guy — he has books and he writes… I was trying to think of a way to engage him and help him.”

McConlogue began blogging about his efforts to help Leo and has received a mix of reactions.

Leo is quoted as stating of some of the criticism McConlogue’s posts have received about his atypical means of trying to help him, “It’s America, people have the right to have their opinions… It’s the Internet, people have the right to post what they want. I agree to disagree.”
