New York – Critics are advocating for doing away with New York’s Scaffold Law, which holds property owners and contractors liable for various types of workers’ injuries on construction sites. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the workplace law, which is protected by trial attorneys and labor unions, is the only one in the country of its kind.

Critics are claiming the law adds proportionately more costs to taxpayers for public projects. Carley Hill, of Union Concrete and Construction Corp. in West Seneca is quoted by the AP as stating of the law, “It increases the cost of doing business and decreases what we are capable of doing in New York state… You are losing potential millions of dollars in jobs that could go to people.”

Those on both sides of the issue reportedly came close to agreeing on changes in the 2013 legislative session.
