For health care facilities, sustainability isn’t just a trend — it’s a priority. That message rang loud and clear at the 50th Annual ASHE Conference and Technical Exhibition, which was held in Atlanta from July 21st through 24th.
ASHE — the American Society for Healthcare Engineering — is an 11,000-member organization dedicated to optimizing the health care physical environment. Its goal is to help hospitals and other facilities lower their operating costs while improving the patient and staff environment. As a leading supporter and participant in ASHE, Camfil — the world’s premier provider of clean air solutions — attended the July conference, with a team headed up by healthcare segment manager Dave Blackwell. They not only demonstrated new Camfil products, but also interacted with attendees to take the pulse of the industry on top-of-mind issues.
“ASHE is an organization made up mostly of hospital facility managers, hospital, directors, and even C-suite types,” says Blackwell. “The purpose of ASHE is to provide a forum where, from a facility point of view, improvements to our healthcare system can be discussed. The summer conference and exhibition — the largest of ASHE’s many events each year — is an ideal forum not only to do this, but to exchange new ideas and demonstrate new technologies.”
What the show made crystal clear, says Blackwell, is the healthcare industry’s growing focus on sustainability. “One of the main takeaways from this year’s event — and it was quite evident — was a desire for truly sustainable solutions for hospitals,” he says. “They want environmental sustainability, energy sustainability, and, of course, financial sustainability. Everyone in the exhibition hall was looking for solutions that lower costs yet improve the patient and staff environment.
It is a trend, says Blackwell that comes as no surprise to Camfil, because sustainability has long been a focus — and priority — for the air filter manufacturer. “This is exactly where Camfil can help,” he says. “Camfil manufactures the industry’s most energy efficient filters — and because they last longer than more traditional designs, they lower disposal, maintenance, and replacement costs as well as energy bills. To put that in perspective, most hospitals that use Camfil’s most energy efficient products lower their annual operational costs between 8 and 12 cents per square foot. That’s a terrific savings for simply upgrading air filters. And it’s low hanging fruit — one of the easiest, least capital intensive improvement projects a hospital can take on.”
Indeed, hospitals can test sustainable air filters — and see the difference they can make — with no investment at all. “Camfil has a program that allows hospitals to try our air filters in one of their air handling units at no charge to them,” says Blackwell. “All they have to do is contact their local Camfil distributor to get the ball rolling.”
The ASHE Annual Conference and Technical Exhibition is the premier industry event for health care facility professionals, drawing thousands of attendees and providing them with a rich educational and networking experience. Camfil has been active at each of ASHE’s national shows for the past several years, managing a booth for hands-on product demonstrations, discussing air filter trends and issues, and providing expertise from the most knowledgeable air solutions veterans in the field.
“It’s all about education,” says Blackwell. “Health care facilities managers want to boost comfort and health for patients, staff, and visitors, without bursting their budget. The good news is, advanced air filter designs and technologies can help them do that. Shows like the ASHE conference help us spread the word — and help others realize the full potential of sustainability.”
