Maringa, Brazil – A family in Brazil is involved in a legal battle over their keeping house-trained tigers. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Brazilian wildlife officials are accusing Ary Borges of illegally breeding the tigers, which is stated to create a public danger.
Borges reportedly has a license to raise his animals, which in addition to the two tigers includes a monkey, two lions, and a pet Chihuahua. He is stated to have rescued the abused tigers in 2005 from a traveling circus.
Borges is quoted by the AP as stating, “Sadly there are so many animals dying in zoos that have no oversight. My animals are treated extremely well … we’re preserving and conserving the species… We have a great team of veterinarians. We give them only the best, but we’re being persecuted.”
Ibama, Brazil’s environmental protection agency, which also oversees wildlife, is seeking through courts forced vasectomies for Borges’ male tigers as well as a confiscation of his caretaker license.
