Washington – The U.S. Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against North Carolina over its new voter law. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Attorney General Eric Holder announced the lawsuit on Monday.

The suit is stated to be part of an effort by the Obama administration to counter the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down a section of the Voting Rights Act in June, which released states from some measures of federal control regarding their elections.

Holder is quoted by the AP as stating in a news conference, “By restricting access and ease of voter participation, this new law would shrink, rather than expand, access” to voting… Allowing limits on voting rights that disproportionately exclude minority voters would be inconsistent with our ideals as a nation.”

The new law in North Carolina places restrictions on early voting and implements more strict voter identification requirements.
