Chicago – A lawsuit is alleging that the Paddle Wheel Inn hotel in Oregon, Illinois terminated the employment of one of its workers because she required the use of an oxygen tank. As reported by the Chicago Tribune, 51-year-old Donna Colvin filed a federal lawsuit against the hotel saying it violated the Americans with Disabilities Act by firing her due to her circumstances.
Colvin purports that she was given a termination letter a day after informing the manager at the inn that she would have to use a small oxygen tank while she worked. She is quoted in the report as stating of the response she received, “They didn’t even listen or ask about what it was… It wouldn’t have been a problem. I was really surprised they reacted the way they did.”
According to the lawsuit, the inn falsely claimed in the letter that the reason for Colvin’s firing was based on her failure to cover shifts during previous hospital stays.
Barry Taylor, Colvin’s attorney, is quoted in the report as stating of the matter, “To assume that someone, just because they’re using oxygen, would be bad for business is really a knee-jerk reaction that is unwarranted.”
