Washington – A new plan from the Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) calls for a major change in the way safety records are filed by companies. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the plan announced by the Administration Thursday would make public safety reports, with the implementation of a new electronic reporting system to aid in the prevention of workplace accidents and illnesses.

As noted in the report, the plan would be applicable to companies with over 250 employees. Marc Freedman, executive director for labor policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, is quoted by the AP as stating of the plan, “Making company-specific data on injuries available for all to see would be a major problem and would likely lead to companies being targeted by outside groups who want to characterize these employers as having bad safety records.”

Current rules require employers to post illness and injury report summaries in common areas where employees can see them.
