New Mexico – A New Mexico county clerk and her deputy resigned from their positions following the state Supreme Court’s recent ruling legalizing gay marriage. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the resignations of Clerk Donna Carpenter and Deputy Clerk Janet Collins were announced by Roosevelt County manager Charlene Webb on Friday.

As noted by the report, Webb did not specify the reason for their resignation; however, county commissioners stated they were due to the high court’s determination that barring same-sex couples from obtaining marriage licenses was unconstitutional.

Commissioner Bill Cathey is quoted by the AP as stating, “She told us in the past that’s what she would do… … I am personally very disappointed in the decision of the judges, and I don’t blame our clerk for doing what she did.”

The county seat of the conservative Roosevelt is Portales, which has a population of about 12,000 people.
