California – As the date for the new transgender rights law in California draws close, schools in the state are making preparations to implement new policies. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the law outlines rights for transgender students in grades K-12, and is the first in the nation to require public schools to allow students use of sex segregated facilities and their choice of participating in gender-specific activities.

As noted in the report, although it has yet to be determined whether a referendum to repeal the measure qualifies for the November ballot, the California School Boards Association is making preparations based on the assumption that the law will stand.

General Counsel Keith Bray is quoted by the AP as stating, “We did strike a balance between the sensitivities associated with gender identity, not only for those students who experience a change in their gender status but the students who would be in the same facilities, in the same classrooms and on the same teams.”
