News – A Mercer University professor and a group of his students are providing free prosthetic legs to amputees in Vietnam. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), biomedical engineering professor, Dr. Ha Van Vo, and the students have been working to increase production of the prosthetics, which were developed in a campus lab.
As noted by the AP, the group traveled to Vietnam last year as part of a college program. The Mercer on Mission program has established volunteer projects in different parts of the world. Some of the amputees fitted for the prosthetic legs were injured by land mines left behind following the war in Vietnam.
Dr. Vo, who immigrated to America from Vietnam decades ago, is quoted by the AP as stating, “I remembered my people in Vietnam with no legs, crawling. Children — a lot of them…I said ‘Oh, we have to do something for them. They cannot just crawl in the dust like that.”
The school is reportedly working with contractors in Vietnam to increase production of the prosthetics.
