Wesley Chapel, Florida – A retired police officer has been accused of shooting two people in a Florida movie theater. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the shooting on Monday was stated to be linked to an argument over texting, and resulted in the death of one person.

Curtis Reeves, 71, a retired Tampa Police Department captain, has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of 43-year-old Chad Oulson. Reeves and Oulson reportedly got into an argument after Reeves asked Oulson, who was sitting in front of him, to stop texting in the theater. Reeves is stated to have gotten up and shot Oulson in the chest during their dispute. He died after being taken to a Tampa-area hospital. Oulson’s wife is stated to have sustained non-life threatening injuries in the incident.

Sheriff’s spokesman Doug Tobin is quoted by the AP as stating of the incident, “It ended almost as quickly as it started.”

Charles Cummings, who was a patron of The Grove 16 Theater when the shooting occurred, is quoted as stating, “I can’t believe people would bring a pistol, a gun, to a movie…I can’t believe they would argue and fight and shoot one another over popcorn. Over a cellphone.”
