US – A new study suggests the MTV shows “16 and Pregnant” and “Teen Mom” have contributed to a reduction in teen pregnancies. As reported by The Wrap, the National Bureau of Economic Research study found that there was a decline in the birthrate among teens in the U.S. following the 2009 premiere of the programs.
The NBER report is stated to read, “Our most important finding is that the introduction of ’16 and Pregnant’ along with its partner shows, ‘Teen Mom’ and ‘Teen Mom 2,’ led teens to noticeably reduce the rate at which they give birth.”
As noted in the report, Nielsen rating data in addition to Google Trends and Twitter were analyzed by the NBER for the study. An increase in searches for abortion and birth control methods was linked to the MTV shows as indicated by the study.
MTV President Steven Friedman is quoted as stating of the programming, “When we developed ’16 and Pregnant,’ teen birth rates were reported to be on the rise, so we created this series as a cautionary tale on the hard realities of teen pregnancy… We’ve always believed that storytelling can be a powerful catalyst for change, and are incredibly heartened by this news.”
