Nashville – A panel granted two appellate judges a reprieve despite a court ruling that invalidated it for an underrepresentation of female members. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission met on Friday in spite of the recent ruling, and voted to give positive recommendations to 22 members of the state appeals courts and Supreme Court.
The panel voted 7-2 in favor of giving a positive recommendation to Judge Andy Bennett and 6-3 in favor of Judge Camille R. McMullen after the two presented arguments for why they should be allowed to maintain their positions. Each had initially received a negative evaluation.
Republican Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey of Blountville is quoted by the AP as stating of the reprieve given to Bennett and McMullen, “It is unfortunate to see the commission relent to pressure and reverse their earlier decision… I had hoped that the commissioners would have the political will to focus on facts, not personalities.”
