Dallas – Jurors began deliberating in the case against former Dallas Cowboys player Josh Brent, who has been charged with intoxication manslaughter, on Tuesday. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), jurors deliberated over three hours following closing arguments.
Brent stands accused of crashing his vehicle after driving drunk while out with friend and teammate, Jerry Brown, who was killed in the accident. The fatal crash occurred in December 2012. Prosecutors allege that the former football player was driving 110 mph at the time, with his blood alcohol level being shown to have been 0.18 percent by blood tests.
Prosecutors Jason Hermus and Heath Harris asked the jury to send a message regarding the dangers of drunken driving with the case. Harris is quoted as stating, “This is almost like a poster child case for intoxication manslaughter.”
George Milner, one of Brent’s attorneys, is quoted as stating to jurors in asking for his acquittal, “You will not then be able to go back in time and correct a mistake if you make it now… There is no going back in time.”
If convicted, Brent may receive up to 20 years in prison.
