New York – An agreement has been reached between New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and a civil liberties group following an extensive legal battle over the stop-and-frisk practices used by the police department. As reported by Reuters, the agreement will put an end to a lawsuit filed by the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR). A court will over see reform of the practices over three years in accordance with the agreement.
The New York police department’s stop-and-frisk practices were found to be unconstitutional by a federal court judge last year. Then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg appealed the decision citing the practices as instrumental in reducing violent crime.
Vincent Warren, CCR’s executive director, is quoted as stating of the agreement, “Today is the beginning of a long-overdue process: the reform of the NYPD to end illegal and racially discriminatory policing… For too long, communities of color have felt under siege by the police, and young Black and Latino men have disproportionately been the target.”
