Kansas – Religious groups in various states are fighting for the passage of measures that would allow the refusal of some goods and services for gays. As reported by Yahoo! News, one such measure received passage in the Kansas House on Wednesday.
The bill, which would make the refusal of service by people and businesses based on sexual orientation or marital status permissible, advanced in the House with a 72-49 vote.
State Rep. Charles Macheers, who drafted the proposed legislation, is quoted in the report as stating, “There have been times throughout history where people have been persecuted for their religious beliefs because they were unpopular… This bill provides a shield of protection for that.”
Thomas Witt, executive director of the Kansas Equality Coalition, says the bill would allow same-sex couples to be treated like second-class citizens. Witt is quoted as stating, “This isn’t just a gay rights issue… This goes against the fabric of what it means to be an American.”
