Washington – Several changes are being made to the SAT college entrance exam, as part of what is stated to be the first update made to the test in nearly a decade. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), revisions to the test include making the essay portion optional, removing less commonly used vocabulary words, and not giving penalties for wrong answers.
College Board officials stated Wednesday that the changes were needed to more accurately reflect what high school students study, and required skills for success in college and for later endeavors.
The new exam will reportedly be revealed in 2016, with scoring being returned to a 1,600 point scale. College Board President David Coleman recently stated during an announcement event in Austin, Texas that it should offer “worthy challenges, not artificial obstacles.”
Millions of students take the SAT exam every year.
