Boston – A U.S. judge agreed to allow the legal fees of a man accused of helping cover the tracks of a Boston Marathon bombing suspect to be paid by a federal program. As reported by Reuters, Magistrate Judge Marianne Bowler said during a hearing on Thursday that Robel Phillipos is qualified to have his legal expenses covered due to his financial need.
Prosecutors allege that Phillipos and two other college friends of accused bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 20, removed evidence from Tsarnaev’s dorm days after the bombing that left three people dead and more than 200 others injured.
Bowler also rejected a request by Phillipos’ attorney Derege Demissie that his partner be assigned to the case stating, “I don’t see this to be of such a great complexity that it needs more than one attorney at a time.”
Tsarnaev’s trial is set to begin in November.
