Detroit – Young drivers are stated to comprise the majority of individuals whose deaths have been linked to General Motors’ delayed recall of compact cars. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), 13 deaths have been linked to the issue with faulty ignition switches on the recalled vehicles by GM.

GM has reportedly acknowledged knowing about the defective switches for at least a decade. It began recalling the Cobalts, Ions, and other compact vehicles affected in February of this year.

Some attribute the disproportionate number of young drivers killed, who were under the age of 25, to the lure of compact vehicles to first time buyers and parents making car purchases for their kids because of price. The reaction of inexperienced drivers in a situation where a defect causes the engine to shut off may also have some correlation, experts say.

Robert Hilliard, a Texas personal injury lawyer who is suing GM in several cases, is quoted as stating of the matter, “With an entry-level car where you have a newly licensed driver, the freak-out will win the day… All that those young drivers are going to do is respond to the panic.”

A reported 2.6 million GM vehicles have been recalled in connection with the defect.
