PAGO PAGO, American Samoa – A pink eye outbreak has led to the decision to keep most American Samoa schools closed for the remainder of the week. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the outbreak has affected an estimated 2,400 students and teachers in the 28 public schools in the U.S. territory.
All of the schools were previously expected to reopen on Wednesday; however, only four have been reopened so far. Education Department Director Salu Hunkin-Finau says that over 30 percent of teachers have taken sick leave due to conjunctivitis, a contagious eye condition that is most commonly referred to as pink eye.
Hunkin-Finau is quoted as stating of the outbreak, “In order to help prevent the further spread of the pink eye virus, we highly recommend that all affected teachers and workers stay home… Please keep your child out of reach (of) those that are affected by the pink eye.”
Some court hearings have also been affected by the outbreak, as well as passengers seeking to board flights.
