Greeley, Colorado – A group of fourth graders were caught trying to sell pot at an elementary school in northern Colorado, where the use of recreational marijuana has been newly legalized. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), John Gates, director of safety for Weld County School District 6, stated following the incident that the students were facing discipline for their actions, but did not specify what punishment they would receive.
The Monfort Elementary School students involved were stated to be three boys and a girl, all 10 years old. According to the report, the drugs appeared to have been purchased legally by adults, and no charges were expected to be filed in the matter.
Monfort Principal Jennifer Sheldon is quoted as stating in a letter sent home with students following the incident, “We urge all parents, grandparents and anyone who cares for children to treat marijuana as you would prescription drugs, alcohol or even firearms. This drug is potentially lethal to children, and should always be kept under lock and key, away from young people.”
