Texas – A teenager accused of making and selling hash brownies is now facing a life sentence. As reported by The Huffington Post, Jacob Lavoro, 19, was charged with a first-degree felony after the ingredients in the brownies were found to include hash oil instead of marijuana.
As noted in the report, the difference in ingredients allowed the state to determine the drug weight amount based on the total weight of the confiscated brownies, which was allegedly 1.5 pounds.
With the first-degree felony charge, Lavoro may face five years to life in prison if convicted.
Erik Altieri, spokesperson for the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, is quoted as stating of potential sentencing in the case, “This case highlights both the absurdity and devastation of our nation’s ongoing war on marijuana… While Colorado and Washington have ushered in the age of legalization, many states still harshly criminalize marijuana and hand out egregious sentences for its possession.”
