California – A high school teacher was arrested after allegedly kidnapping three students at knifepoint. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), police say the teacher, John Edward Maust, asked the students for a ride, then ordered that they take him to a fast food restaurant.
The incident is stated to have occurred after the students saw the 34-year-old Arroyo Pacific Academy teacher standing on the sidewalk and approached him to say hello. The students later told investigators that Maust appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.
According to deputies, one of the students managed to call 911 while they were in the vehicle. Maust fled after seeing a sheriff’s helicopter. He surrendered at the police station on Sunday, and was booked at the Crescenta Valley Station.
Maust is being investigated for kidnapping, false imprisonment, and criminal threats. None of the students were hurt in the incident.
