New York – A 25-year-old bakery worker says she was fired by her employer after it was revealed that she was expecting. As reported by PIX11 News, the woman, Hope Burgos, also says she was given a termination letter after she was confronted by the owner of Corrado Bread and Pastry, Aaron Matalon, over her pregnancy.

Burgos was hired at the bakery in March, at which time it had not yet been made known that she was pregnant. She is quoted as stating of being approached by Matalon about the termination of her employment, “He blatantly let me know that I was a great worker but that he no longer wanted me working in his establishment because I was expecting.”

PIX11 News reportedly contacted Matalon about the matter, and Burgos’ allegations were stated to be confirmed.

Matalon is quoted as stating to the news source, “She was pregnant but as a result of her being pregnant she did not come to work a few mornings that she was supposed to. She’s said she’s to the emergency room and stuff like that.”

David Gottlieb, an attorney for the expectant mother, is quoted as stating in response to the bakery owner’s assertions, “Ms. Burgos never missed work. There were two occasions when she asked, in advance, not to be put on the schedule for a particular day because of a doctor’s appointment. She was never told that there was any problem with her attendance.”
