Honduras – The first among what officials say will be many planeloads of migrant families to be deported from the U.S. were sent to back Honduras on Monday. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, the flight, carrying only mothers and children, transported 38 Hondurans who had been held at a detention center in the U.S. prior.
U.S. officials have expressed an intention to continue to take these types of measures to curtail the wave mass migration from Central American that has reportedly had an overwhelming affect on border officials in the country.
An official with the Department of Homeland Security is quoted in the report as stating of the issue, “This is just the initial wave… Our border is not open to illegal migration, and we will send recent illegal migrants back.”
Many reportedly venture to the U.S. due to issues such as a lack of jobs and the threat of violence. As stated in the report, one Honduran human rights worker has called their forced return by the U.S. “a great tragedy.”
