Pakistan – Five men have been indicted in connection with the death of Farzana Parveen, a 25-year-old pregnant woman, who was killed by relatives in Pakistan. As reported by Glamour, Parveen was stoned to death by approximately 20 relatives in the city of Lahore.
As noted in the report, the case gained widespread media attention in part due to the killing taking place in a pubic sphere in front of onlookers.
Parveen’s father and four others were indicted by a Pakistani court for her death.
Saroop Ijaz, a lawyer and commentator, is quoted as stating to the New York Times of typical cases of so called “honor killings” involving the deaths of women accused of bringing shame to their families for certain behaviors, “The state has created an enabling environment for honor killings… A woman being disciplined by her family is seen as a private matter by the police, the courts and the law.”
